We are feeding them meatbird feed because the nutrient ratio was virtually identical to whatever other feed we were considering (perhaps grower/pullet feed ... I don't remember!) at Farm and Home Supply. Also, they are outside all day, every day, so they have access to plenty of green forage and bugs. I also read somewhere that chicks can even be started on meatbird feed if you don't want to give them medicated chick feed, but I can't find the reference! Well - the chickens are doing great. They are growing well and look healthy and beautiful.

Of course, we will switch them over to layer feed once they start laying.

For a lot of interesting reading about feeding and caring for chickens, I'd recommend The Modern Homestead website: http://themodernhomestead.us/article/Poultry.html

Nice little flock you have! I love the variety. I'm all about variety myself. Why are you feeding them meatbird? I have never heard of anyone doing that so I was just wondering what your reasoning was. I'm always up for learning something new.

Yeah, I am starting to wish we got a few cockerels to raise for meat, since the girls are turning out so healthy. The Polish rooster is pretty scrawny and obviously isn't a meat bird. :)
