Tara Lee, Tara Love
This is a poem I wrote many years ago about my little sister, Tara, and how her untimely passing affected my family. (Nothing fancy, just free verse.) She was six when she made her transition, the result of an accident while hiking with family and friends in the mountains near our home in Big Thompson Canyon, Loveland, Colorado. Her 40th birthday would have been next August; the 30th anniversary of her passing was a couple of years ago. Her ashes were scattered at the lovely waterfall where she died; I know I’ll have to go back there someday.
(Please forgive the odd formatting between verses; I can’t figure out how to get WordPress to do what I want to do; I’ve only ever published pictures and prose on my blog.)
Tara Lee, Tara Love
Tara Lee, Tara Love,
You were the loving one,
The forgiving dear heart.
Tara Lee, Tara Love,
You were the strong central tie
Of a poorly knit family.
—————
Tara Lee, Tara Love,
We were never strong.
We are sadder, Tara Lee.
We feel wiser only in the knowing,
Of how death brings misery to the living,
Of how hearts stop feeling,
Of how souls cannot fully heal.
—————–
Tara Lee, dear heart,
Your mother, your father,
Your sister, your brother,
Were shattered.
We were thrown to the
Disassembling winds
By your passing.
——————
Tara Lee, Tara Love,
Your death was the beginning
Of the end, for your family.
It was the end of our lives,
Yours, and ours together.
————–
Tara Lee, Tara Love,
Science and spirituality tell us,
That no energy is ever truly lost.
So if you are in every breath we take,
We know then the world is a better place
For your passing into a larger sphere.
——————–
O Tara Lee, Tara Love,
We cannot say what should have happened
What life should have been,
For you or for anyone.
Tara Lee, Tara Love,
We wish you happiness in a place of peace.
We love you and we miss you,
Tara Lee, Tara Love.
